A Seaside Maternity Photoshoot in France

A LIFE-CHANGING ANNOUNCEMENT

Last February, we spent a couple of days at my parents’ beach house in France with a group of friends to celebrate a few birthdays together. It’s a habit we got into since many of us live in different cities (or countries, as I now live in the UK). As we were taking a group photo to commemorate the moment, one of our friends announced that she was pregnant. The photo was actually a video, capturing the moment of surprise and excitement from all of us. And I started thinking about what a potential Seaside Maternity Photoshoot for them could be like…

Capturing those last moments before becoming parents

The Opportunity, and the perfect light

Fast forward a few months later, she had a lovely bump, and we gathered for a few days on the French West Coast. With four photographers in our group, we naturally decided to do a maternity photoshoot for our friend and her partner. We drove to the beach in the late afternoon to catch the beautiful golden light. As it turns out, clouds provided the best light diffuser we could have hoped for. Many people think a clear sky is all a photographer want, but more often than not, it’s not the best forecast for us. Cloud cover allows us to worry less about the direction of the light and the shadows cast on the subjects.

The Best Outfit Choice

Our mum-to-be, being a photographer herself, knew exactly what to wear for her photoshoot. The result is lovely! The color scheme complements the environment beautifully, and so do the types of clothes they chose. Interesting materials, such as a velvet dress that catches the light beautifully, a linen shirt, and jeans, allowed for a very aesthetically pleasing result without overpowering the beauty of the moment, which is exactly what you want to go for.

Being Creative

One of the benefits of photographing a friend in this way is that there’s not the same pressure; they’re not a client. This meant I got to try new things and be more creative—new prompts, new poses, and new tools such as fractals to play with the light. Reconnecting with creativity is incredibly important sometimes. That’s how we photographers get better at what we do and find new ideas too!

MY HIGHLIGHTS

In the end, we had a lovely time among friends, experimenting and having fun. Our friends got lovely maternity photos out of it too. Now, they are the proud parents of a lovely boy who’s growing up way too fast, reminding us that time really flies and emphasizing the importance of capturing those fleeting but incredibly important moments.
