What is Lifestyle Photography

The Photography Lingo

When looking for a photographer, you can encounter weird vocabulary such as “posing”, “editorial”, “fearless”, “moody”, “fine art”… And “Lifestyle Photography” is part of this semantic! Let me walk you through what it means…

THE SETTING

For me, one element of Lifestyle Photography is a known/familiar environment. It can be indoors or outdoors, as long as it holds meaning. If you’re a family and you love spending time in the kitchen, chatting and cooking together, then photographing you baking a cake makes total sense. If you’re a couple and you love walking your dog in a specific forest, let’s go there for there and capture it! Basically, it has to be a real-life situation, in a place you would have gone to even if it wasn’t for a photoshoot. When you go back to the photos years later, you’ll remember your habits, or the way of life you had. That’s what I aim with Lifestyle Photography: it’s not just about photographing you, it’s about giving you the ability to go back in time when you look at your photos.

THE POSING

As much as we’re capturing candid moments, there’s a way to get aesthetically pleasing photos out of it. We want to use the light and the environment to our advantage so the moment in the photo is enhanced. That’s the main difference you get from trying to take photos yourself and getting a professional photographer to do it. I will usually place you where the light and backdrop are the best, and probably roughly position you so the composition of the images is as good as possible. Then, I’ll give you a prompt to create a natural interaction. You’ll move around, you’ll talk, you’ll laugh, but the basics are here to capture the genuine emotions you’re experiencing in the moment, in the best possible technical way.

It’s all about capturing who you are

All in all, I’d say Lifestyle Photography is about capturing who you are, in your natural environment. It’s about creating that nostalgic moment when you’ll watch your photos in a few years, and say something starting with “Aaaaw remember when…”. So, if you want to start creating memories, give me a shout and we’ll create some magic together!
