There are so many good reasons to choose a Destination Wedding Venue in France. A wedding in France is a dream for many couples. And yes, I am a little biased! But what can I say? The Frenchies are romantics.
First, the weather. I love the UK, don’t get me wrong… but the weather in France is usually a bit more forgiving, especially if you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony or dinner under the stars. Then, of course, there’s the food. I do love a good roast, but French cuisine? That’s just something else.
Another big difference, and something many international couples don’t realise at first, is that many destination wedding venues in France are offered as dry hire. In other words, they are a blank canvas. You’re not locked into a fixed package or a rigid structure : you can truly design a wedding that reflects you, your story, and your priorities. And if you know me, you’ll know I am a complete sucker for that approach.
How French Wedding Venues Work
French wedding venues are also very often hired for the whole weekend, from Friday to Sunday (sometimes even Monday). This naturally turns your wedding into a full experience: a welcome dinner on Friday, the celebration on Saturday, and a relaxed brunch on Sunday with your loved ones. And very often, this can cost the same (or even less) than a one-day venue hire in the UK.
That being said, it’s important to understand that French venues work very differently from many British or American venues. UK venues are often all-inclusive, with in-house catering, coordinators, and structured timelines. In France, it is much more “DIY”. You will usually source your own vendors, coordinate the setup, and organise the flow of the day, or hire a wedding planner to support you.
But if you are dreaming of a wedding that feels intentional, personal, and truly yours rather than copy-and-paste, it is absolutely worth it.
So without further ado, here are five destination wedding venues in France that I genuinely love – each with a completely different atmosphere.
Location & Accessibility
The Domaine des Evis is located in the Perche area of France, about 1h30 from Paris. Thanks to its proximity to Paris airports, it is surprisingly easy to reach from abroad. Your guests can travel by train or car while discovering a beautiful region known for its rolling hills, bocage landscapes, and old country houses.
Atmosphere & Style
This venue is incredibly authentic. It used to be a farm, surrounded by moats, and has been renovated while preserving its warm, family home atmosphere, very characteristic of the region. The owner, Juliette, is an absolute sweetheart and has the most incredible eye for vintage decor. She has thrifted and gathered objects with real history, which adds so much charm to the place.
You could genuinely spend hours exploring the different rooms and noticing all the details. In the main house, there is a whole shelf full of antique clocks. The large room where the groom often gets ready feels like a mix between a playroom and a library, with a snooker table, a piano, and an entire wall of bookshelves filled with vintage pieces “chinées en brocante”.
Why It Works for a Destination Wedding
The courtyard is perfect for a drinks reception, with a covered area in case of rain and beautiful stone walls covered in vine. Both the gîte and reception areas feature stunning glass walls that bring a subtle modern touch to the historic building. The reception room, with its stone walls and wooden floor, is spacious enough for flexible table layouts and a proper dancefloor, and in summer, dinner can also be set up outside.
This venue is ideal for couples looking for countryside vibes with a strong sense of character. If you love places that hold history, vintage details, and a more relaxed atmosphere rather than a grand château setting, this is a wonderful choice. It is also a very practical option for international guests, as Paris is well connected and shuttle services can easily be organised from the airport. For guests who enjoy a road trip, Le Havre, Caen (Ouistreham), and Dieppe are all within about two hours’ drive.
Why I Love Photographing It
From a photography perspective, it is an absolute dream. Everywhere you look is visually interesting. The vine-covered walls change colours with the seasons, and the care put into the decor creates a homely and unique atmosphere that is perfect for detail shots. It is also a venue where two weddings can look completely different even in the same space – and if you know me, you’ll know how much I value celebrations that feel personal rather than copy-and-paste. Location & Travel
Château de Montreuil is located in the Nantes area, in the Loire Valley region. This part of France is famous for its castles and vineyards, and it embodies what many people imagine when they think of a French château wedding.
Nantes can be slightly less straightforward to reach than Paris, with most direct flights coming from London as far as the UK is concerned, but it is my hometown and a city full of culture and personality. You can quite literally see a giant mechanical elephant walking through the city – which is an experience in itself. It is also only one hour from the seaside, making it a lovely option if you are planning a honeymoon in France after your wedding.
Classic French Elegance, without being overwhelming
What I particularly love about this venue is that it has that elegant château flair while still feeling intimate and human-sized. It is beautiful, but not overwhelming or Versailles-like. And in my experience, the most meaningful weddings are often the ones where you can actually spend time with your guests rather than just saying hello in passing.
Ceremony & reception Layout
Now, a slightly controversial opinion: I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with grass for ceremonies. As much as I adore greenery, standing directly on grass can be uncomfortable for guests (especially with heels), and green light reflection can sometimes affect skin tones in photos. There, I said it.
This venue solves that beautifully with a stunning wooden terrace set diagonally in front of the château and surrounded by tall pine trees. The trees create natural shade, which is incredibly appreciated on warm summer days, and the terrace is perfect for a celebrant ceremony or even an outdoor dinner. Imagine walking down the aisle with the château in the background of your photos… I’m obsessed.
Behind the château, there is also an orangerie that serves as the reception area, surrounded by a terrace and shaded by trees. The glass-walled reception room is gorgeous and, very importantly, air-conditioned. I once photographed a wedding there in 37-degree heat, and I cannot stress enough how comfortable and well thought-out the space was. Having photographed multiple heatwave weddings in France, this detail alone makes a huge difference.
Who It’s Perfect For
Overall, this is the perfect venue if you are after classic French elegance without the scale and formality of a grand palace. It offers on-site accommodation and remains very reasonably priced for the level of experience and flexibility it provides. A Historic Southern Setting
Château de la Rode is a stunning southern France wedding venue located near Toulouse. Dating back to the 12th century, it was originally a Cistercian abbey, and its inner courtyard with cloisters is a beautiful reminder of its history.
It is true that the venue is somewhat tucked away in the countryside, but it is more accessible than it seems. Toulouse airport is about 50 minutes away, and Castres airport is only 20 minutes away (although smaller and with fewer direct international flights).
The building itself is absolutely gorgeous, with light-filled preparation rooms, a magnificent staircase, and a peaceful, understated elegance. Compared to a Loire Valley château, it feels simpler and quieter, yet more refined than a rustic country house. Elegant without being showy.
Designed for a Wedding Week-end
The layout of the grounds is particularly well suited to a destination wedding weekend. While the venue can host larger events, it feels especially perfect for around 50 guests, as it creates a cosy and intimate atmosphere without anyone feeling lost in a vast estate.
One major advantage is the on-site accommodation for around 50 guests across gîtes and rooms. This is incredibly valuable when you are asking loved ones to travel abroad. There is also a pool (which both adults and children will love during hot southern summers), and the bridal suite, with its soft blue tones and bright pink bathtub, is a complete vibe.
Plan A, Plan B & Practical Details
The interior courtyard is ideal for an outdoor wedding breakfast with fairy lights coming to life as the sun sets during speeches. And, as a very type A person, I must say: I LOVE a good Plan B. The venue offers a beautiful indoor-outdoor summer lounge filled with natural light, perfect for a ceremony or dinner if the weather turns.
If you are planning a destination wedding in France, turning it into a full wedding weekend here makes perfect sense. A relaxed welcome dinner on Friday, a slow and stress-free morning on Saturday while everyone gets ready on site, a long celebration without curfew pressure, and a lazy brunch by the pool on Sunday. From a photography perspective, the variety of backdrops is incredible: gravel areas for ceremonies, cloisters, staircases, courtyards, and soft natural light even indoors. The Setting : Château & Orangerie
Back to the Loire Valley – but this time, the focus is not the château itself, even though the Château des Briottières is a beautiful luxury property near Angers. The wedding venue is the Orangerie, located within the château’s park.
You can hire the full estate (château and orangerie), but many weddings take place mainly in the orangerie area, which already offers a wonderful balance of intimacy and elegance. With a gîte of six bedrooms, a dormitory for additional guests, and a reception space that can host up to 180 guests, it combines countryside charm with practical flexibility.
Flexible Layout & Guest Experience
The courtyard is absolutely lovely, surrounded by stone buildings and vine-covered walls that add so much character. There is also a covered porch for drinks receptions, although most celebrations naturally flow from the courtyard into the reception space.
Like many French venues, it is highly adaptable. You can hold your ceremony indoors or outdoors, have dinner in the courtyard, or fully customise the layout depending on your vision. The gîte “Le Fruitier” is especially beautiful for getting ready, with its glass walls, soft light, and subtle historic touches inspired by Angers’ famous Apocalypse Tapestry.
One of my favourite aspects is that you can often access the main château grounds for couple portraits even if your reception is based in the orangerie. This gives you an incredible variety of photo locations without changing venue. There is also a fruit garden nearby that feels almost Bridgerton-like – perfect for a quiet stroll away from the crowd.
Light & Atmosphere
The light at this venue is truly special. The earthy tones of the buildings, the gravel courtyard, and the deep green vines create warm, soft reflections, especially as the sun sets behind the orangerie. Golden hour here is consistently beautiful and flattering, both visually and emotionally.
Best of Both Worlds!
It really feels like the best of both worlds: an intimate reception space with the elegance of a historic château setting for portraits and atmosphere. Mediterranean Location & Surroundings
Finally, we head towards the Mediterranean area. While not on the French Riviera itself, Château de Malmont is located near Montpellier, which I personally love. It has a bit of a Bordeaux-meets-Paris energy, but with Mediterranean light and a more relaxed pace.
The château is situated about one hour inland, close to the Lac du Salagou – a breathtaking protected site known for its red earth landscapes and biodiversity, often compared (on a smaller scale!) to the American West. It is also relatively accessible, with direct flights to Montpellier from London and Manchester, or a high-speed TGV train from Paris in about 3h30.
Even before discussing the building itself, the surroundings are stunning. Vineyards, hills, and peaceful countryside views create that effortlessly “French” atmosphere international couples often dream of.
Estate Layout & Accommodation
The château offers around ten en-suite bedrooms with air conditioning, multiple living rooms, a family kitchen, a professional kitchen for caterers, a large terrace with pergola and barbecue, a swimming pool, a boules court (yes, very French), and several hectares of grounds. Originally built in the late 19th century as an estate for surrounding farmland, it blends quiet luxury with countryside charm.
Ideal for a Destination Weekend
It works beautifully as both an event venue and a holiday-style estate for a full wedding weekend. You can host a larger reception in the main space, then transition into a more relaxed villa atmosphere for the rest of the stay. Guests can explore the Montpellier “arrière-pays”, enjoy the pool, and truly experience a different side of France beyond the typical tourist routes. Dry Hire: What It Really Means in France
As mentioned earlier, many French wedding venues are offered as dry hire. Some may have in-house catering, but most function as a blank canvas for you to build your event exactly as you envision it. This allows for a very personal and intentional celebration, but it also requires more organisation, especially if you are planning from abroad.
If you love DIY projects and have family and friends willing to help with setup, you will likely enjoy the process. Otherwise, hiring a wedding planner or coordinator can be extremely valuable, particularly if you do not speak French. Not all vendors are fluent in English, and having someone with a local network can make the experience much smoother. While I am not a planner myself, I always support my couples with vendor recommendations, timelines, and communication when needed, thanks to my experience in the French wedding industry.
Catering & Food Culture
French caterers are exceptional and usually offer a wide range of menu options. Tastings are highly recommended, and it is important to clearly communicate any dietary requirements. French culture places a strong emphasis on food quality, so discussing alternatives for specific diets in advance is always a good idea.
Weekend Hire & Setup Logistics
Because venues are often rented for the whole weekend, you typically have time to set up on Friday, celebrate on Saturday, and pack down on Sunday. Unlike many UK venues, there are usually no in-house coordinators or permanent staff beyond the vendors you hire. In simple terms, you are renting a private estate for the weekend.
Curfews & Wedding Timelines in France
Curfews are often much later than in the UK, sometimes around 4am or even later, and traditional French wedding timelines also differ. Ceremonies often take place around 4pm, followed by drinks reception until 7pm, dinner from 8pm onwards, and the dancefloor starting late in the evening. It is not unusual for French weddings to continue until sunrise.
The French Cake Moment (Yes, It’s a Whole Event)
Cake cutting is also a bit more theatrical: the cake is often presented with music, sparklers, and champagne, and then served as dessert by the caterer. It becomes a real moment of celebration rather than a quick tradition.
